The Workshop
I don’t know anyone—and I mean anyone—who wasn’t somehow influenced by The Wizard of Oz as a child. Personally, I was petrified, yet strangely drawn to those flying monkeys. And who could forget the Wicked Witch’s theme music: da-na da-na da-na naaaaa… (arguably one of the most iconic seven-note motifs in film history).
Then there’s the giant green glowing head of the Wizard with flames erupting around it… the black-and-white striped stockings of the Wicked Witch of the East curling up beneath the house… and of course, the Winkies—those green, poofy-hatted guards chanting, “O-ee-yah, e-oh-ah!” (Admittedly, as a kid, I thought they were saying, “Oreo, yum yum.”)
And for those of you who appreciate pure cinematic weirdness—nothing, I repeat, nothing—tops the Popeye-looking Munchkin Lollipop Guild dudes. (And in the name of the Lollipop Guild… they welcome you to Munchkinland.) It’s all so mesmerizing. And let’s face it: this movie is a goldmine of inspiration for the creatively inclined.
In this class, you’ll choose a character from the books or the films and, using a variety of found objects and doodads, create your own contemporary interpretation. This could be a freestanding sculpture, a shrine, or something in between—the sky’s the limit. I’ll guide you through the assemblage, sculpting, and (of course) the ever-essential painting process.
Speaking of painting… I’ll be whipping up a batch of new Oz-themed paint color washes—like Slipper Envy Green, Rusty Tin Man, Cowardly Yellow, and Bubble Glinda Pink.
Interested? All you have to do is close your eyes, click your heels three times, and say: “There’s no place like a Michael deMeng workshop… there’s no place like a Michael deMeng workshop…”
The Art class will feature about 5 hours of pre-recorded videos.
Facebook Live Q and A sessions: 6/14, 6/21, 6/28. 7/5, 7/8, 7/12 and 7/19
On July 26nd there will be a class critique on Zoom for all those who wish to participate.
